From Future

Hey! I'm StylusEpix. I'm on FuturesWiki too!

I'm new. I'm looking around and rewriting stuff. Tell me how you feel about my work!

I try to be funny. Wanna read a few paragraphs of my FutureFic?

[edit] On Categories

Categories are useful, but one must not become afraid of being restrained by them. I see the following categories:

  • Beliefs - expression of personal beliefs regarding future technologies and the underlying assumptions behind our predictions
    • the prime example would be Faster than light - Why I don't believe in FTL but wish I did
  • Scenarios (aka Hard Science-Fiction?)
  • FutureFic (between Scenarios and Sci-Fi, bound by a set of rules)
  • Sci-Fi

This needs some more thought. Creating useful categories requires some work...

[edit] What is FutureFic

Good question. I'll telling you what ain't:

  • It's not completely serious - no sane man predicts the future with certitude. He who claim to know for sure what's to come, sure is mad!
  • It's not hard science-fiction - It has more latitude in making predictions about the future, it's not as tightly bound by the minutiae of technological evolution. It doesn't have to explain every new technology.
  • It's not soft sci-fi - It doesn't break the fundamental laws of nature. No warp drive or FTL travel or communications, no breaking the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle, no Time Travel. Why? I suppose this alone merits a series of articles to explain. I'll start with Faster than light
  • It isn't fanfic either - it's not a Star Trek or Star Wars spinoff.

Okay. To be honest, I'm not sure how I can define FutureFic. I'm not sure that I even *want* to define it. I don't want to put myself in a box. So, should I create a "Fiction" category, or should I try to subcategorize it further?

We have Scenarios already. Now, a lot of them I would consider to be "soft sci-fi". Why? I don't even know! That's how useless my classification system is.

Sci-fi it takes so many things for granted and doesn't try to be scientifically accurate. But who am I to speak like that? There's no way to classify fiction by how scientifically accurate it tries to be. That's got to be a biased system. It can't work.

Hard Science-Fiction: Maintains scientific accuracy. Doesn't break the laws of physics. Doesn't try to see beyond a singularity. Has to be set in the near future, 100 years at most, in order to maintain a level of credibility for the predictions it makes. This would be what we call a "Scenario" at this time.

FutureFic: A bridge between the two. It can be humorous, sarcastic, ironic, or even a pure troll piece, whatever. It doesn't break the laws of physics. Does it have to be short? Maybe not, but for now, it is. Is it fanfiction? Not really, but multiple FutureFic pieces can live within the same "universe", and perhaps they should. That's what Scenarios are now... Interlocking pieces of fiction... FutureFic should strive to improve itself and its own consistency. It is a style unique to the wiki, in some respects, as it is to be rewritten constantly.

Soft Sci-Fi: Breaks the laws of physics. Can be post-singularity, 300 years in the future, whatever. Star Trek, Star Wars. This is fiction, and the "science" part is not really there. The "science" is expressed as technobabble.

Oh, how I hate classification systems while loving them at the same time.

I'm thinking that perhaps a Category:Fiction with subcategories would be the best. Can this handle subcategories? Does every piece of Fiction need to be subcategorized? No. But if I get around to defining what FutureFic is (rather than what it isn't!) I could tag the FutureFic pieces with both Category:Fiction and Category:FutureFic

I haven't decided what to do. Do you have any suggestions?
