The United States presidential election of 2016 was held on Tuesday, November 8, 2016. It was the 58th quadrennial U.S. presidential election. Incumbent president Barack Obama was ineligible to run for a third term. Carly Fiorina narrowly defeated Senator Bernie Sanders. At first, Sanders appeared to be leading Fiorina. However, the choice of Senator Chuck Schumer of New York as running mate, as well as his over the top performances in the debate made Sanders look too radically socialist. Fiorina gained the Republican Party support from both females & Latinos after choosing Senator Marco Rubio of Florida as vice presidential nominee. Eventually, she won the election, becoming the first female to do so.

Democratic Primaries

When Clinton first announced her run for president, it seemed like a cakewalk for the former Secretary Of State. However, Bernie Sanders' effort to relate to the general public became successful. Also, the email scandal looming over her, Clinton decided to drop out. Following this, Vice President Biden decided to enter the race. Biden became very popular & many predicted he would be the one to snag the nomination. However, after an embarrassing performance in the primary debates, Biden sank & eventually dropped out leaving Sanders unopposed.

Republican primaries

May the beginning of the election, many believed Bush would be the party's nominee. However, Trump entered the race & became extremely popular. After his anti-Bush campaign proved successful, Bush had no choice but to drop out. At first, Fiorina was considered an underdog of the party until a private 5:00pm debate. Fiorina's popularity soared. After narrowly edging out Trump in polls, the businessman dropped out. Making Fiorina the nominee.
