The United States presidential election of 2020 was the 59th quadrennial Presidential Election. Democrat Hillary Clinton, incumbent President from New York, defeated Republican Piyush "Bobby" Jindal, Governor of Louisiana. This election was notable for the nomination of Jindal, the first Indian-American major party nominee in electoral history. The selected electors from each of the 50 states and the District of Columbia voted for President and Vice President of the United States on December 12, 2020. Those votes were tallied before a joint session of Congress on January 8, 2021. Clinton received 290 electoral votes, and Jindal 248.
