A U.S. commonwealth is any one of 27 federated commonwealths of the United States of America that share sovereignty with the federal government and those of their own various states. Because of this shared sovereignty, an American is a citizen both of the federal entity, the commonwealth and of his or her state of domicile. Commonwealth citizenship is flexible and no government approval is required to move between commonwealths (with the exception of convicts on parole).
Congress may admit new commonwealths on an equal footing with existing ones; however, a commonwealth cannot be admitted without the prior admission of a new state. There can be no more than one Commonwealth per planet, and commonwealths cannon secede from the union. Each commonwealth is named for its planet of origin.
The cradle world of humanity and to a lesser extent the United States, the Earth Commonwealth is the largest and most prosperous commonwealth in the United States. It is home to America's wealthiest cities as well as the US Capitol of Washington DC.
Earth remains, like all human civilizations, the cultural hub of the United States' vast network of territories. Since the first off-Earth colonies on Mars began taking in settlers from Earth, the US population on the planet began to level off, hovering around 300 million people since the 2020s. This is partly due to the decline in birth rates on the planet, however it is also the result of the endless stream of cosmic pioneers seeking new opportunities on the colonial worlds.
Often called Humanity's Second Home, Mars was the first planet to be terraformed by humans. It is home to seven US States, and has a society nearly identical to that of Earth, save for a supposedly larger population of adventurers and extreme sports stars, due to the more perilous terrain and genetically reanimated prehistoric fauna.
The US occupies the northern coasts of Tharsis and the most of the north side of Valles Marineris, a region known for a climate that ranges from that of the subarctic to the tropical. The most densely populated US state on Mars is Viking, where the first US Settlers arrived shortly after terraforming had achieved limited stability for the equatorial regions. Viking's is home to Mars' official capitol of Viking city, which lies on the north-eastern coast of the state, however the largest city and cultural hub of the Mars Commonwealth is in the Cliff hanging city of Mariner Bay that straddles the great valley's mouth.
The second world to be terraformed by Humans, Venus is a hot tropical world, with most of its population residing close to the poles. Like Mars it is socially very similar to Earth, however it has a growing population of botanists that have taken advantage of the natural greenhouse that is the planet's climate for growing a wide range of exotic flora.
The US Venus Commonwealth is largely situated in towards the northern subtropical region of the planet, though some territory does extend to the much hotter tropical islands to the south. Venus's largest state is New Florida, which as its name would suggest, is home to many former Floridians. The planet has become quite popular for retirees and vacationers in recent years, however its residents rarely take to the beaches due to the occasional sulfuric acid burst that are not expected to be completely cleaned for another five decades. Some select beaches are closed off and safe, however they are quite expensive to use.
Atlantis was the first human extrasolar colony to be founded. Following the First Contact War, the IEV Independence was put to the task of finding new worlds for humanity to explore and colonize, and Atlantis was the first to be discovered. Atlantis has a surface 95% covered in water. Its population has become largely defined by its seafaring culture, as most cities are actually built on the water itself for need to conserve land based resources.
Poseidonis is both the largest city on the planet and the capitol of the Atlantis Commonwealth of the United States. The city was built on a lone island in the middle of the planet-wide Atlantean ocean, and since its initial construction, has come to double the land area of the old island. Atlantean states are somewhat more difficult to define than those on other worlds due to them largely being spread out over a series of island chains and archipelagoes. The largest landmass on the planet, which is only slightly larger than New Guinea, is controlled primarily by the Indians, thusly resulting in the US control large swaths of open ocean.
Some Atlanteans have gone so far as to dwell on massive floating towns that drift from port to port, making it a nightmare to define their residence to a given state.
The Atlantean economy revolves around fishing, which makes Atlantis one of the great food-producing planets of the U.S.A.

Lewis was founded in 2046 largely by a large dispatch of Virginians and New Englanders. The twin world to planet Clark (see below) it is one of only a few worlds colonized by a single country. Lewis orbits on the opposite side of the same star as Clark, a planet it is only slightly more massive than, and shares the exact same climate and population count.
Lewis's economy is largely centered on architecture and biotech. Its massive "Stairway to Heaven," spaceport is just one example of the Lewis population's obsession with architectural design. The spaceport is defined by a huge nanotube reinforced, marble ring that is supported above the port by eight massive pillars that also make up the various terminals. Ships coming in have to land through the large ring, which houses among other things, the control center for the spaceport.

Clark orbits on the opposite side of the same star as Lewis, a planet it is only slightly less massive than, and shares the exact same climate and population count.
Clark society is largely centered around agriculture and the fishing industry. The planet's oceans, which cover half the planet, are home to some of the more unique aquatic organisms in the Earth Sphere. While the largest life-form is the Great Capillata, most of the sea life on the planet are rarely larger than terran nurse sharks. As an ironic twist of evolution, the limited size of these creatures had promoted the concentrations of nutrients in their systems to produce very unique flavors that are have come to make Clark one of the premier exporters of sea food in the Earth Sphere.

A lush and plentiful world, Avalon has become one of the most prosperous colonies of mankind. Blanketed in countless rain-forests, great river basins and almost no deserts outside of the frozen tundra of the poles, Avalon is one of the few worlds humans are able to inhabit without significant genetic modification to their existing metabolic processes. Its American population is largely from the old Pacific North West, however some from the Appalachians have also made a home there as well.
Avalon's economy is primarily driven by artisans and agribusiness, with Oberon being one of the leading producers of unique artwork in the Earth sphere. Perhaps Avalon's most famous export is a unique variety of GM Apple that was engineered shortly after arrival. Known as White Arthurs, these Apples appear as if bleached white, however they are prized throughout the sphere for how well the caramelize into Pies, ciders, and other food stuffs.
Founded exclusively by the US, Plymouth is populated almost entirely by New Englanders. A colony whose greater continental mass lies in the norther hemisphere, Plymouth is a fairly cold commonwealth, however the equatorial island chains are famous for the array of fresh fish they bring in thanks to the increased heat.
Thanks in part to the climate, Plymouth is the most underpopulated inner colony of the Earth Sphere. This is also due to the reasonably homogeneous economy, that is dependent on the fishing industry and what little is produced by local designers and engineers. Plymouth is known for its seafood, which is its greatest export throughout the sphere. Its most famous catch, is a indigenous sea creature known as the Sea Crane, an almost avian looking creature known for its suculent meat that doesn't reaquire chemical treating to be eaten by humans.
Founded in a Joint American/European Expedition, the US Omaha Commonwealth was largely established by former members of the US military. The planet is very similar to Earth in terms of climate and geography, with much of the flora and fauna imported from Earth.
On the edge of the inner colonies, Omaha's economy boomed when the first insurrections and rebellions began in the outer colonies. With such a high population of former military members and weapons contractors, Omaha developed a reputation as the primary off-Earth ship and weapons manufacturer and home to the two largest military bases for the Colonial Security Force.
CSF has recently established its primary intelligence division on Omaha, the Department of Colonial Intelligence; which monitors all know insurrection movements throughout the sphere. With its capitol of Bradley (named for US Army General Omar Bradley) Omaha has been able to establish itself as one of the most advanced worlds in the Earth Sphere.
Founded largely by Midwesterners, Lincoln is a peaceful, scholarly world, defined by great universities and agribusiness. Known for its enormous fields of Hannibal (a cereal grass found on Lincoln that humans can safely ingest) and the high population of historians, philosophers, and writers, Lincoln is often called the Planet of, "Philosopher Farmers.
Its capitol of New Hardin is home to one of the most prestigious universities in the Earth Sphere, the Fireside Institute of Technology, which has produced more doctoral thesis papers on Xenobiology than any other university. New Hardin also houses more chronoscope researchers off Earth than any other inner commonwealth, making it one of the largest producers of historical discoveries and films in the Earth Sphere.
Of all the planets in the Earth Sphere, Lincoln prides itself on being listed as the least likely to ever have an insurrection.
Founded by Anglo-Europeans as a farming colony, American settlers settled on the lesser continental mass in 2044. With a very wide temperate zone across the planet, Arcadia is ideal for growing high quality produce that cannot be made to the same quality in vertical farms.
Since its initial colonization, Arcadia has become the chief US supplier of high quality wines, liquors, beers, Kobe beef, and leafy greens. Its most famous export is Carmel, a leafy vegetable that has a smooth buttery interior protected by a crisp cabbage like shell.
Like most farming colonies, Arcadia's population has not grown much beyond the initial surge after its founding, however new settlers from Earth arrive almost every other day seeking the simpler life of a farming colonial.
One of the few "Earth Twins" to have no intelligent life of its own, Rhea's American Population owe their success to the study of its unique flora and fauna by the hordes of naturalists, geneticists, and xenobiologists it produces and attracts. It was first founded by an exploration party of former associates of the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History.
Rhea's capitol of New Alexandria is one of the largest cities in the Earth Sphere, and is home to the New Smithsonian Museum. The commonwealth's economy, while largely based on research and the commerce generated by the endless supply of goods naturalists require to explore the planet's vast wilderness; surface ship building and airships are also in high value for the transportation of explorers to the various parts of the planet.
The first of the outer colonies, Griffin is an a naturally Earth-like planet, however most flora and fauna are the products of genetic engineering. First founed by a Franco-German Europeans, most of the Americans living on it today are originally came from the North West and New England. Culturally Griffin is an outer planet in both location and culture, in that it is not as homogeneous as Earth. The Griffin Commonwealth's population is 45% Secular, and 55% Wicca. This is evident in almost every aspect of Griffin society. Most architecture is Gothic, traditional folk or WitchTech (a blend of goth music, celtic and techno) are the most popular musical genres, and on top of formal education, most children attend "Moon School."
Thanks to advances in genetic engineering, the people of Griffin have been able to take their beliefs into the physical world, producing all manner of mythological beasts to populate their territory. "Magic," is practiced through either traditional holistic medicine, GM enabled holistic products, and the use of holographic projectors to simulate etherial effects.
First founded by the Japanese due to the majority of its land-masses are in a climate zone similar to that of the home islands, most American settlers were from the West Coast. The first American to set foot on Kimura was Dr. Mina Iwata, a direct descendant of one of the many Japanese Americans interned at Camp Harmony in Puyallup, Washington during the Second World War. The capitol city was named for this detention center, and Kimura today has grown into a quiet American outer colony.
Kimura has the highest Buddhist population off Earth, thought the vast majority of the colonists are secularists. Its economy is reasonably diverse, and it has one of the lowest crime rates in the outer colonies.
Meath was terraformed by Irish Europeans in the 2060s and was shortly colonized by Americans as well after the Shannon Purchase, which sold the continent of Shannon to the Americans. Like their European Neighbors, most of the American colonists are of Gaelic decent, and have settled on Meath, whose climate is similar to Ireland throughout large swaths of the planet, to try to rekindle their heritage and experiment with ancient Irish tradition.
Most citizens on Meath are officially secular, however Irish lore and Pagan ritual are common throughout the commonwealth. The only acceptation to this rule is in the State of Patrick, which is largely populated by some of the last American Irish Catholics, and is home to the largest Cathedral off-Earth.
While Reth was first founded by a group of Austrain-Euorpeans shortly after Griffin was established, it has been defined as the homeworld of a group of "Confederate Americans." Home to some of the last of the Southern Baptists from the Old South, Reth was founded as is scrawled on the side of their congressional building, "The last refuge for the decedents of Dixie, and all those who refuse to bow to the anarchists and foreigners of the Sphere."
Reth is considered by most Americans to be the most backwards commonwealth in the union, as it is the last place in the US where a month is dedicated to celebrate the history of the CSA; Southern Baptism is still preached; and laws limiting marriage contracts still exist. It is also the second largest producer of firearms in the sphere, the first being Omaha.
Reth has tried and failed many times to limit the separation of church and state in their commonwealth and its five states, however these efforts are usually met with failure, thanks to a particularly vigilant branch of the ACLU based out of New Charleston. Many members of the US Government are worried that Reth will someday attempt to secede from the Union as their cultural ancestors tried and failed to do centuries ago.
Kavelin was first founded by Russian Europeans in the hopes of perserving their dying culture, and it has since become a home for many Alaskans hoping to do the same. A cold world that only required minor terraforming to become livable, the Kavelin Commonwealth is one of the least populated Commonwealths in the US, having only the State of New Alaska to their name, however several territories have been claimed.
A relatively conservative Commonwealth, Kavelin likes to keep out of much of the American political discourse, asking only for what aid they need to keep their relatively new colony alive.
Terraformed in the 2060s under contract from the US and Europe, Archer was founded primarily as a farming colony because of its relatively smooth surface and temperate climate that was enabled by the proximity to its star and limited elliptical orbit.
Colonized largely by Midwesterners, the Archer Commonwealth is a quite, but prosperous planet incorporating two states, and bordering the Franco-European Archer Republic. 75% covered in land, its surface remains lush and fertile due to a large network of rivers lakes, small seas, and largest of all a series of underground aquifers that feed most of the planet's surface bodies of water.
The Minerva Commonwealth was founded by the last Rooseveltian Liberals.
Hansen was founded by Danish-Europeans that were seperated from a larger exploration fleet. Its rich deposites of Tungston and "Rare-Earth Elements" have made it a largely manufacturing colony.
First founded by some of the last Chinese Socialists with the dream of eventually bringing back the PRC. Most Americans living there today are Midwestern Marxists, hoping to also influence the US as a whole by example.
Discovered in 2055, Torres is was a naturally habitable world for humans, roughly the size of Earth. With only two small Seas, one roughly the size of Australia, Torres is an arrad world with very few areas where humans have chosen to settle.
First founded by a group of Arabian explorers seeking a place to expand Zaidi-Shia teachings, it is ironically also home to the US State of Jefferson, named for the first American President to go to war with a Muslim country. The American commonwealth borders the small African colony of New Nigeria, established in 2062.
Nehru is India's outer most colony, and there has been a great cultural mixing between the American and Indian colonists who populate it, due to the somewhat patchwork spread of territory.
