Problem with the usage, not with tech
GM is an example of a good technology being used irresponsibly. The problems are not scientific or technological, the risks are small and are being constantly evaluated. The problems are political, economical and social. Genetic technologies are used to perpetuate poverty, gain control for global monopolies and are not being used socially responsibly. Similarly, the Internet could have been used in a less free way so that the control remained in the hands of media monopolies, if only they were quicker to mandate DRM everywhere. We were lucky on that one.
The chief concern about future technologies that we should have may not be with the technological risks, but with social impact and the ability of our societies (especially the capitalist ones) to implement them for the benefit of mankind.
