Before speculating on the effects, some possible relevant factors, as of May 2007:

• Extremes of wealth and poverty. Huge oil/gas wealth, often mafia related, whilst many have a subsistence living.
• Economic migrants to west, younger people. Resented by west, 'they take our jobs', but actually contributing to the prosperity of the west, as they do jobs westerners are not prepared to - for low pay.
• Prior to the fall of the iron curtain, much research in bio-weapons. These scientists now 'unemployed', but with the know-how, and in some cases access to the raw materials.
• Other military 'technology' of former USSR, concerned with human performance and control. Biofeedback, training regimes etc. Ability to train people with extreme skills (chess, gymnastics, espionage, engineering) that surpass Western methods.
• Widespread lack of understanding of former USSR in the west, due to language barrier. More of a one way barrier, as many Russian speakers have English too.

Changes to 2017:

• Highly technologically aware mafia. Able to bring down the internet (easy), able to subvert the internet hide/manipulate information from searches (harder).
• Much richer USSR, thanks to control of gas pipelines, returning emigrants better able to do business on their terms with the West. Better exploitation of natural resources (especially rare earth metals).
• Top surgeons train in Russia. Unparalleled healthcare, based on skills.

In 2017:

• Highly charismatic communist/marxist leader emerges. Brings a new local-commerce model where property is owned jointly, but at a local level, communes of around 80 people, networked into larger organisations. Built on franchise model.
• Adopts an evolutionary approach (Lisenko, not Darwin), to social organisation. Improved communication means that best practice disseminates rapidly. The communes work.
• People in the communes work extraordinarily hard, but in return get varied work and superb education, childcare and health services.

• Leader proposes ECONOMIC conquest of the west. Borders closed to foreigners. All western owned property taxed so highly, also via protection money, that no longer economic for westerners to own Russian property.
• Conquest is via multi-nationals, rather than physical invasion. In 2027 Russia owns Coca-Cola, Ford plays second fiddle to the Trabbant, Sony is now a subsidiary of GKM.
