Talk:Future artefacts

From Future

[edit] Layout

The layout of the 'Future Artefacts' page looks pretty bad in Firefox (the browser I use). Do we want to go for a style using tables like in Gallery, or is there a better way? JC 20:46, 12 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Other Artefacts

I'm thinking of adding a list of 'everyday objects' and descriptions of how they might change. But perhaps that is too speculative. Anyway here is a possible list:JC 20:46, 12 October 2006 (UTC)

  • Bicycle - Custom manufacturing leads to custom made bicycles, made to size.
  • Cooker - Miniaturization principle suggests heating rods that you stick into potatoes, meat etc to cook it.
  • Fridge - GMO fruit, veg, milk, eggs, butter keeps for weeks outside fridge. Fridge smaller, used much less. Crushed ice (not ice cubes) produced on-demand as needed from kitchen tap.
  • Cutlery and crockery - Increasing shift to 'finger food' and food that is its own container, e.g. soup-served-in-a-bread-roll. You eat the roll after the soup.
  • Wallet - No need in most places. A computer IDs you from many factors, retina, thumbprint, voice pattern...
  • Calculator - ask your Mobile phone.
  • Television and Radio - becomes VR.
  • Fans - Rotary becomes piezzo-electric vibrating fan.
  • Central Heating - Smaller, thinner bore pipes, using super heated steam.
  • Toilet - Space toilet, vacuum rather than water based.

[edit] Artefacts described elsewhere

  • Clothing - Illuminated, custom made, new fashion based on optical-illusion using computer-design techniques to optimise shape flattering effect.
  • Computer - Processor unit integrating both memory and processor becomes a plug-in, in same way that USB memory sticks and SD cards currently are.
  • Car
  • Lighting - LEDS, psychological lighting.
  • Mobile phone - becomes a cochlear implant.
