Super Bowl LI was an National Football League game to decide the champion of the 2016 NFL Season. The game was played between the New England Patriots and the Arizona Cardinals.
The Arizona Cardinals and New England Patriots came into Super Bowl LI as the highest scoring offenses in the AFC and NFC.
The New England Patriots entered Super Bowl LI with a 12-4 record. The Arizona Cardinals entered with a 14-2 record, including a 42-17 routing of the Patriots during the regular season.
1st- Arizona receives the ball to start the game. An 80 yard drive resulting in a Larry Fitzgerald touchdown making it 7-0. After empty possessions by both teams, The Patriots marched down to the 1 yard line with 3:01 to go. A Tom Brady pass was picked off by Patrick Peterson for a touchdown making it 14-0 Cardinals.
2nd- Arizona capitalized on New England mistakes. Scoring 10 points in the second, including a Hail Mary to the endzone completed when time expired giving Arizona a 24-0 lead at the half.
3rd- New England went on a surge. Scoring 21 points in the third quarter. With 2 touchdowns coming from Carson Palmer interceptions.
4th- New England opened up the fourth with a Steven Gostkowski field goal to tie the game. After empty possessions, Arizona received the ball with just 1:47 remaining. Able to drive down the field to kick a field goal to give Arizona a 27-24 lead with :20 to go. Brady would complete a pass to Rob Gronkowski with only :02 seconds left. New England called a timeout. At the 50 yard line, Brady threw a pass down the field, and Calvin Johnson with only one hand caught the ball in the endzone between three defenders. Johnson would go on to say after the game "I actually didn't see the ball, I just threw up my hand and hoped for the best".
