[edit] Currency
Since 2059 the Interstellar Credit "Eartho" has become the universal currency of every interstellar nation of Earth and her allies. The few exceptions to this are the Siberians and the Caliphate of Central Asia. The ISC Eartho was developed after a proposal by Japan to create a truely universal currency with the economic surge of the Colonial Boom making exchange rates both obsolete.
[edit] Politics
- The US and Japan have the most liberal systems of government with the induction of Government Wiki. Europe has adopted their own Parliament Wiki, however most power still lies in elected representatives.
- In the US there are but two political entities left, the Populist Party and the Independents. Populists are conservative by the standards of 2075 (extremely libertarian by 2009 standards), and the independents are exactly what their name implies, a collection of independent candidates.
- There is currently a cold war going on between Siberia, Europe, the US, and China; though it is no where near going hot.
- Siberia is the world's last communist state, and the only Orwellian nation (though Gran Colombo is often equated to one)
[edit] Health
- Alcohol, tobacco, and cannabis are all legal, but very highly regulated in the US and Europe. Medicinal Marijuana is a common treatment for pain.
- A cure for autism was discovered by several hospitals in New York City, New York, U.S.A back in the year 2025. Autism is now eradicated from the world and everyone can work for a living.
- Advances in GM Drugs, nano robotics, and artificial muscles allow the elderly to leave their nursing homes under their own free will and back into independent living, many of which begin to return to the work placed as the most experienced in their fields.
- Nano robotics and GM Drugs will also prevent cancer, heart disease, Alzheimer's, organ failiure and stroke.
- A mouthwash of GM bacteria will make brushing one's teeth obsolete.
- Nanobots will also keep the hair perfect; eliminating the need to brush or cut your hair.
- There is a cure for Ebola.
- All meat in the developed nations is now grown in vats from vegetable protein (in vitro meat). It was originally developed as space food, and has been genetically modified for reduced fat and larger amounts of protein and iron. This also allows for large cattle farms to be "re-wilded," (see Enviroment).
- The United States begins to crack down on obesity, making it the first nation to do so, followed by China, South Asia, and the South Pacific. The laws its government passes outlaw high fructose corn syrup, and put much stricter regulations on what goes into food. Weight-loss drugs are paid for by the US Universal Healthcare Program.
[edit] Business
- Due to the massive layoffs of the late 2000s/early 2010s, more than 75% of jobs are either home-based, self-employed, or freelance. The few remaining jobs that are still employed by large companies, are manufacturing jobs, reserved for the few remaining boomers and undereducated working class.
- Most of these private companies congregate as design firms, creating products that people can buy on an iTunes like marketplace, and simply print on their home molecular replicators or "fabbers."
- Taxes on those who make over $500,000 a year in the US is at 50%, those who make over $10,000,000 annually, 90%. This has led to a society where the rich are no longer in total control of the social ladder, or political power.
- Space mining is the source for most of the world's resources.
[edit] Education
- Education receives more government funds in most countries than defense. Schools have been reformed to be much more informal forums, where teachers (who are paid on par with doctors, lawyers and engineers) create an open discussion teaching environment that builds greater confidence in students to ask questions and put forth their own ideas.
- In most countries children begin their education at age 3, which is normally when they are able to read, write, and understand basic mathematic principles. Primary schools typically last from Kindergarden to 5th grade, with each grade taking up 6 months of the year (not including vacation days) and are largely focused on teaching mathematics up to advanced Algerbra; Social Sciences up to advanced Literature, World and national history, and Science up to basic genetics (going from Physics to Chemestry, to Biology.) After Primary education is complete most children move to a charter school where they focus on developing the skills that they find most intersting or believe to be more adept at. This is known as High School, but lasts only three years. During said time students usually move on to a university or other advanced learning centers to begin hands on career training. Most graduate college by age 13.
- Where the blackboard chalk, and notepad were standards of the classroom during the 20th century, a new array of tools of learning have become the standard of the 21st century.
- Neuro-computer interface: Better known as the Rapid learning machine, NCIs are used to dramatically increase the speed and efficientcy of learning. Designed from a modified Xbox Impact NCI, these machines allow users to essentially download information directly to the brain.
- iPad: While there are many other types of e-paper notepads, the iPad is the most popular among students. With the processing power of a 2000s supercomputer, the iPad gives students unlimited storage space to practice the skills they had learned with their NCIs.
[edit] Energy
- In 2035, all of Earth's accessible petroleum had been depleted. This would not be a problem, however, as during the 2010s, once the global financial crisis had subsided, the developed nations of the world began major investment in alternative energy and fuels in order to prevent a crisis from occurring once peak oil was reached. By 2055, all of the energy in the developed nations of the Earth would be provided by either personal energy sources (rooftop solar cells and wind turbines), nuclear fusion and hydro power (now encompassing oceanic tidal and current power, as well as river dams). The UN Convention on Energy and Pollution, signed and ratified by all of the Earth's developed nations in 2025, would prohibit the use of unclean sources of energy, such as coal, nuclear fission, and petroleum.
- In 2033 Cold Fusion was finally achieved thanks to Helium 3 mining outposts on the Moon. The first reactor was tested aboard the Prospector-5 mining station, currently cold fusion is employed as the chief power source for most large vehicles or those for military/space applications. The smallest reactor is roughly twice the size of a D Battery, and is used for Power Armor and small lasers.
- Solar cells are included in almost everything in modern construction, clothing, and of course electronic devices. The most efficient cell, used on rooftops, is capable of absorbing 81% of all light that strikes it into pure electricity.
[edit] Environment
- By 2075, the ozone in Earth's atmosphere was almost completely restored.
- Re-wilding efforts are now common place, as farmland is less necessary due to vertical farming and vat grown food. In 2015 the Moa Bird, Tazmanian Tiger, and Haast Eagle were all returned to new wildlife reserves due to advanced cloning. This is true for Buffalo, Passenger Pigions, Dodo birds, and the Chinese Freshwater Dolphin.
- By 2050, most of the polar ice has returned and atmospheric carbon levels have returned to where they were in 2000.
- In 2055 the nations of the world signed the Amazon Protocol. This pact declares large swaths of the world as protected ecosystems. These zones include the Amazon Rainforest, Most of the world's northern Taiga forests, The Polar Ice Caps, the Congo Jungle, the Himaleya's, the Jungles of SE Asia, Patagonia, the American great plains, the jungles of India, and most of the world's oceans.
- By 2063 the majority of the space debris in LEO has been cleaned up, and anything that leaves the atmosphere is under strict global standards for debris mitigation.
- My this day most humans on Earth live in great megalopolises, giant cities with little to no suburban sprawl. The largest of these cities is the New York Megalopolis, a population of some 70 million people. The few areas humans live outside of megalopolises are the few sparsely scattered hamlets, small towns of usually no more than 30,000 people. These towns are normally located in the, Protected sections of earth. With great Cities and Hamlets all considered no more than 10% of the Earth's surface is used for human development. The rest of the planet is under the zones set by the Amazon Protocol.
- Developed: Areas free for human development. 10%
- Protected: Areas where no human development may occur above ground. These Areas are essentially giant national parks.. 60%
- Preserved: Areas where humans are not allowed to enter save for scientific endeavors. 30%
- Placed in no farther than a 100 mile radius of a sister unit are "Ents" nano-robotic machines used to monitor the status of the forests. Most of these devices are largely covered in moss, lichens, and even small trees due to the lack of human contact.
[edit] Materials
- Carbon nanotubes are used for most construction by this time, including that of the several space elevators which have been built on the Earth, Mars, and the Moon.
- All Manufacturing is carried out by molecular replicators that have rendered all traditional manufacturing jobs obsolete.
- Meta-Materials enable invisibility.
- Aerogel is the standard insolation of humanity.
- Transparent Alumina are the most common form of window.
[edit] Computing and Robotics
- Neural interfaces have lead to the greatest immersion of human society and the internet since the invention of the mouse; this recognition of a person's personality and backround acts as the only characteristics that matter. Thanks to this advance, ageism, racism, and sexism, have almost completely vanished.
- Due to the greater integration of full body prothestetics and genetic enhancement; the debate over life has been settled: existance is defined by thought, and a human's right to abort a pregnancy is considered a non-issue.
- Human/animal neural interfaces are now a common subculture, where people and their pets share a simbiotic neural link.
- Androids are a common household item. Due to the advances in nano based computer's they have long since surpassed humans in overall data processing and storage, though their actual intelligence is not much greater than that of a very average high school student, and sentience cannot be achieved without pre-programing. Their are currently only two androids that were illegally programed to be sentient, and their is a great debate over their status a citizens.
- Computer Viruses are still a major problem as well as Trojans, Spyware, Hacking, Worms and other malware.
- Powered Armor-With the advances made by in nano manufacturing powered armour has achieved that mythical Iron Man look. Capable of lifting as much as 5000 kilos, most powered armor is used in medicine, astronautics, and construction, though the world militaries have considered outfitting their soldiers with a military grade suit. Some suits have even been outfitted for atmospheric powered flight.
[edit] Culture
- Social Networking has lead to the creation of "Tribes." Sub-national organization's that anyone can affiliate themselves with, for the sake of developing an idea or group. Countries are no longer the centers of cultural growth, but rather the Tribes.
- The world's most popular sport in the physical world is MMA. The most popular sport online is currently Griff Ball. The most popular motor sport is IRL (Indy Racing League) followed by NASCAR in a close second place.
- Blogs are have supplanted Op-Eds.
- While many independent publications are availible on-line, the largest and most widely used source of news is the Wikistreet Journal, a branch outlet of Wikimedia's WikiNews.
- Star Trek returned as a popular series in 2059. Following the missions of the crew of the Enterprise-J in the 26th Century, the story revolves around the Temporal War against the Sphere Builders first depicted in Star Trek Enterprise. The plot is much more based around time travel and multiple realities; at one point the Enterprise-J travels to the 21st Century of OTL, and makes a technological exchange with the crew of the famed Independence.
- Calling something Socialist is considered immature and uninformed.
- Conservative is an epithet, much as liberal was during the later half of the 20th Century and early 21st Century.
- George Carlin is taught as in English Language classes.
- In 2017 the 9th generation of video game consoles all incorporated the first advanced neural interfaces. These systems allowed users to experience taste, touch, sight, and sound, all with a level of realism that was akin to the real world. Of all of these consoles, the Microsoft Xbox: Impact, was the most successful. So much so that its interface became nicknamed the Matrix.
- By 2036 video games cost not much more than any other form of of digital media, and video game consoles had long since been integrated into an all in one home computer device.
- The most popular game of 2075 is Civilizations: Origins III. A game that allows the player to create a nation from scratch starting as early as the dawn of mankind, and interacting with all of history. The game incorporates first person combat, RTS style unit command, and a city creator. The most popular shooter is Resource Warrior II, a game that follows one of the many PMCs during the many small wars of the Flood.
- Where from the 1980s to the early 2000s Cyberpunk was the most popular sci-fi medium, from the mid 2000s to 2030s, steam punk and bio-punk competeded for dominance.
[edit] Music
- With any and all musical genres easily accessible since the invention of digital music software, and even more so with the 2053 abolishment of copyright, music has returned to what it was during the times of the first bards. Popularity is the only ligament gauge of a band, and most support themselves simply through concerts and other performances.
- Space Blues is the most popular musical genre, with Jupiter's Shadow as the world's most popular band.
- The genre was first pioneered by 00s musician John Mayer with his song "Gravity," a favorite of the first private astronauts. In 2045 the song was remade by Elsie May, one of the great pioneers of EuroBlues, during the recession of the 2040s. In 2067 Space Blues was formerly established as a musical genre with the release of the best selling song "3 Years Out," written by former astronaut Isaiah Bradley, about his time on Mars in the 2020s. When Jupiter's Shadow was formed by retired astronaut Blind Eddy Jackson, who lost his sight while on a mission to Mercury, the genre exploded in popular culture. The band rose to fame with their hit rendition of Elton John's song "Rocket Man." Currently their most popular song is "Pressure (Venus is a Bitch)."
- Rock music still remains a staple of American musical culture, though by the 2070s it has evolved into "Grind Rock," which combines elements of Jack White's style of blues and funk with Thrash Metal.
- In 2015 Rap was eclipsed by Warp Music, a genre first pioneered by famed music producer and former singer Kanye West. The genre was first introduced with songs like, "Stronger," "Love Lockdown," and "Heartless." The most popular "Warper" of all time was K.G. Patil, a second generation Indian-American (People of Indian decent were stareotyped for their love of Warp Music.) whose popularity lasted well after his retirement in 2023.
- Much like Rap Music and Hard Rock during the 00s, Warp Music found its diametric to be Smoke Rock. The genre was seen in its infancy through the works of Bob Dylan and Stevie Ray Vaughn; but was truly made iconic through the associated works of rock legends Jack White and Matt Bellamy. With its stables being old sythesizers, hollow body guitars, and just a generally twisted sound.
[edit] Body Art
- By 2022 most people have at least one tattoo or pearcing by age 21. Tattoos are no longer the senseless pieces they were in the late 20th Century, and Tattoo Artists are trained on par with proffessional artists and their work is always totally custom and very detailed. Most tattoos people get are symbolic, representing the victory over a personal challenge, a personal love, or fallen friends.
- In 2015 the catalyst for commonplace body art was born in the form of new varitey of tattoo ink that could be eliminated painlessly simply through an genetically modified bacteria that would clean the skin of the ink.
- In 2025 bio-lumenecent tattoos are created.
- In 2029 bio-animated tattoos are invented.
[edit] Relationships
- Online dating accounts for over 79% of all couples by 2075.
- Only 30% of people in the United State engage in religious ceremonies for marriage. While Civil Unions are relatively common, they are now germian to not only couples (gay and straight) but to long time friends as well.
- The most common marriages in the US with religious ceremonies are interracial; typically between hispanic and caucasian partners. Typically the Mezzies.
- Following a swell of Chinese and Indian immigrants during the Flood, arranged marriages had a brief spike during the 2020s.
- In 2055 the first inter-species marriage between a human and a Naucean occured in Japan. Currently there are 720,000 couples in the Earth Sphere who are of different species.
[edit] Drugs
- Cannabis eclipsed alcohol as the most common recreation drug in 2040. Alcohol and LSD became second and third.
- Cocaine, Heroine, Meth, and other hard drugs were legalized in the late 2040s when molecular and genetic engineering made it possible for scientists to refine the drugs to have no adverse effects to a user's health. Though most of these drugs are not very popular.
- Tobacco became the least widely used recreational drug in 2074.
- In 2033 cyberdrugs were created. These drugs caused direct hallucinations and incredible highs though the use of brain/computer interfaces.
[edit] Pets
- Genetic Engineering began to yield designer pets as early as the mid 00s. But upon the GM boom of the 2020s, GM Pets have become common place.
- By 2075 the most common household pet is still the domesticated cat. However, due to the variety of GM pets, cats are far more advanced than the simple felines of old times.
- Most pet cats have neural interfaces for their masters to work in sync with.
- Many pet owners have opted for the GM Lynx most commonly known as Ozzies for their resemblence to Bubastis, the GM Lynx of the Watchmen.
- GM has allowed many people to have pet Harp Seals that maintain the appearence of pups. This has also eliminated the slaughter of the species.
[edit] Religion
- 50% of people claim to be either Agnostic Theists, Agnostic Atheists, or simply claim to have no Religion
- Religion is no longer organized, but is rather ordered more as philosophy, similar to Buddhism or Confucianism.
- The largest Religions are Islam, Buddhism, and Catholicism.
- Religion plays almost no role in Industrialized Politics.
- The Christian Right of the latter 20th and early 21st century are viewed as either Religious fanatics or flaming hypocrites.
- What is left of the Baptist Church of the deep south has long since integrated with the KKK.
- Mormonism was declared a cult in 2039; however since the creation of the New Union of Christ, most people of the Mormon church have moved on.
- Scientology ceased to exist in 2044.
- In 2038 in the US the Tax Exempt status for religious institutions was lifted. Churches are taxed like all other buildings used for large gatherings.
- Thanks to the invention of a working chronoscope in 2033, most religions ceased to exist as they were prior to that date, due to the quantum metaphysical revelation and archeological confirmation of the falsehoods of these beliefs. (Note: I cannot predict the following, these are simply examples of what could cause a massive secularization of society.)
- In 2038 it is confirmed that Jesus Christ was a man who lived between 4 BCE to 33 CE. He was a doctor by profession, who lived with his wife Mary and daughter Sarah though he preached tolerance and human decency as a cause. The claim that he was a carpenter is not surprising in that most people had to have basic craftsman skills at the time. His mother was named Mary, who did not give a virgin birth, but was actually raped by a Roman Centurion. He never claimed to be the actually son of God, but rather that all were the children of God. There were no miracles, and there was no resurrection.
- Moses is confirmed to have existed as the leader of only a handful of Jews were kept as slaves in Egypt, and escaped several years after captivity. They confirm that he did see a burning bush, while on hallucinating on Opium.
- Muhammad's image is shown, he is revealed to have been much more compassionate than recorded, and that Islamic Law was changed from his much more humane text after he died by a group of clerics.
- Buddha is revealed to be a flesh and blood philosopher.
[edit] Space Exploration and Colonisation
See main article, Scenario: 2075 (The Second Renaissance)/Timeline Of Future Space Exploration
[edit] Transportation
- By this time, all of the major cities in the developed nations of Earth have their own public transportation systems. This measure significantly reduces congestion. All commuting is done by trains (which by this time are maglevs powered by nuclear fusion generated electricity), taxis, buses, or walking, bicycling, and personal air vehicles. The taxis and buses are also all powered by electricity. Most cities by now are designed similar to Washington DC, and Masdar City in the UAE, making cars unnecessary since most services and utilities are within walking distance.
- Transportation between towns and cities is done entirely by maglev and vactrains, making the old major highways, such as the American interstates, obsolete. A global vactrain network has been set up, including a Bering Strait tunnel and several transatlantic tunnels. Automobiles are only used by residents of rural areas who live far from any city or town, and these are all electric, with recharge stations in place in every city and town in the place of the old petrol stations and other places of refueling.
- Advances in gyroscopes and engine technology have allowed for Segway to begin selling small inline skates with hub mounted electric motors. This the most popular form of personal transportation among the world's youth.
[edit] Air/Spacecraft
- All aircraft are able to achieve spaceflight and reach the Moon. Some are able to travel to Mars, but most have to use the Cycler network.
[edit] Automobiles
- In 2013, shortly after the Flood, most western countries outlawed the sale of petroleum as a fuel source. With the global automobile industry still recovering from the Great Recession.
- During the Space Boom the automobile industry roared to life once again, and many brands left by the wayside were returne dto life.
[edit] Sea Craft
[edit] Crime & Punishment
- There is no death penalty. The maximum punishment is 25 years hard labour (Category Epsilon Felony) on martian penal colonies, with no possibility of early parole, which is usually reserved for serious crimes such as treason, piracy, rape, murder, slavery and trafficking. Beyond that is the life sentence in cryogenic stasis.
- There is a more relaxed attitude to now legal, "soft" (Category Beta Misdemeanor) narcotics such as cannabis, Ecstasy and LSD, with "hard" (Category Delta Felony) drugs such as Heroin, Meth and Cocaine getting the possessor 5 years hard labour for dealers. Possession and userers are treated as sick people.
- With the end of the war on drugs in the early 21st century, the amount of gangs decreased, and many analysts compared it to prohibition
[edit] Military
- In 2045 the world military's received a tonnage and personel cap relative to the size of their territory, the UN (reformed in 2039) now has the UN multinational force for dealing with military operations on either large scale or in rogue states.
- By now the military industrial complex has been destroyed.
- The United Nations Space Corps is the exclusive military force off Earth.
- Power Armor is common place.
[edit] History
[edit] Civil Rights
- The treatment of Gay and Mexican Americans during the 2000s is considered as big an injustice as the treatment of women and African Americans during the 1950s and 60s.
- In the late 2020s the GM civil rights movement began for people who had elected to be genetically augmented. In the US, the last Boomer politicians opposed any and all rights for people to have genetically augmented with "non-essential modifications." These people included animal/human hybrids (furries), unusual skin colors (rainbow children), and those that modified themselves to resemble fictional creatures (FreakGeeks). In 2037 the US became the first country on Earth to pass the Genetic Rights Act, under President Modi.
- In the 2040s the first sentient AI was "born," in Kyoto, Japan. This machine had the intelligence of a high school student, and upon gaining sentience began to wonder about who it was, and what it should do with its life. Its "mother," Proff. Mizuho Kanzaki, created the AI "Soto" in the image of her son who had died during the flood. Soto was given a robotic body through which "he" could directly interact with the world, and began to try to coexist within human society. In 2045, a short year after he became the first non-human to own property, Japan passed the first anti-AI rights law, forbiding such transactions. Soto was ordered to be deleted by the Japanese government, but Proff. Kanzaki fled to America to escape the possibility of the murder of her son. In 2049 the United States passed the first AI Equal Rights bill, however it failed to protect other AIs (there were about 20 at the time) from persecution in states. Soto became a leading advocate for non-bodied entities (AIs and humans who had become AIs) and in 2066 he became the first non-human United States Senator. In 2070 the Colonial Amendments were passed, and civil rights were granted to all in the US.
[edit] Wars
- The Second World War is no longer a societal pillar. Most people are as detached to it as many in the early 21st century were with the Civil war or the Spanish/American War.
- The Iraq War is as synonymous with quagmire and fiasco as Vietnam was in the late 20th Century.
- The War on Terror of the early 2000s is now called the US-Jihaddist War.
- During the flood the US began a massive redeployment of troops to areas of immediate US interest. This caused another Flood time recovery on top of the one caused in the battle to reduce Greenhouse gasses.
- Following the end of the War in Afghanistan, the US began a policy that entailed the use of military intervetion in small regional conflicts, but left full scale war as a last resort.
[edit] General
- Most historians consider the Baby Boomer Generation to be the most destructive of the 20th and 21st centuries.
- Generation Y is often referred to as the Greatest Generation.
- The greatest human discoveries are considered to be the internet, FTL, and the written word.
- The Flood is considered the greatest disaster in human history. Many have suggested that years should be recored in a Before the Flood and After the Flood, instead of BCE and CE.
[edit] Political History
- George W. Bush is considered the worst president in US history beating both James Buchanan and Richard Nixon.
- Ronald Reagan has become a Warren G. Harding of presidents. He is remembered to have been insanely popular during his time, but is now largely blamed for his policies that led to the Great Recession.
- John F. Kennedy is considered the most overrated president in American history, remembered fondly only for the Apollo program.
- Margaret Thatcher is remembered in Europe as a crypto-fascist.
- Jimmy Carter has been largely vindicated in history, though he is not necessarily considered a great president.
- Bill Clinton is considered to have been a moderate conservative.
- Barack Obama is considered the fourth greatest US president after Abraham Lincoln George Washington and Franklin D. Roosevelt.
- Israel is remembered as an apartheid state.
