Independent Kurdistan (Officially the "Republic of Kurdistan"), is a partially recognised nation in the middle east. They maintain control of the former autonomous region formerly known as "Iraqi Kurdistan", plus several territories that were not included in the previous former autonomous region of Iraq. They also lay claim to much of Greater Kurdistan, a term used to refer to Kurdish inhabited areas (not all of which are shown on the map).
Independence from Iraq
The Republic of Kurdistan was founded on the 1st November 2020 after the Independence Referendum on the 12th March 2019. A Referendum was originally planned in 2014 but was postponed by the then Kurdish Regional Government while they focused on the fight against Daesh (ISIS/ISIL).
The Iraqi Government finally agreed in December 2018 to a formal independence referendum that would actually lead to Kurdish independence if the people voted in favour for it, unlike the informal independence referendum in 2005, almost 15 years before.
