The Persian Gulf Standoff was a nautical confrontation between the United States Navy and the Islamic Republic of Iran Navy in the wake of the threats by Iran, who claimed that the Strait of Hormuz will be blocked off if the United States did not stop imposing sanctions on them. The confrontation began on January 3, 2012 and lasted for one month until Iran's ships launched a surprise attack on the American naval fortifications before departing to the Strait of Hormuz, where the Iranian ships successfully blocked it.
The aftermath of the attack was a war led by the United States against Iran that lasted for two months and resulted in the deaths of many soldiers on both sides and the complete destruction of Iran's nuclear facilities, thus setting Iran back many years in nuclear capability.
