FutureWikia:Hosting
From Future
Dear readers,
- What can we do to help our Russian-speaking friends? What can we do to encourage bilingual people to translate good ideas in both directions?
- A wiki to talk about the future is a great idea! What should we do when we find other wiki dedicated to this topic? If we see some wiki shutting down, what should we do to salvage good ideas about the future, before the wiki goes offline?

[edit] Multi-language?
I am thinking about how we can make Future Wikia multilingual... There are plenty of Russian contributors willing to help, but so far the exclusive use of English was a barrier. (http://rtd2.pbwiki.com/ is a similar wiki in Russian) See http://www.wikia.com/wiki/Languages for more information on multi-language wikis. What do you think? Paranoid 20:32, 11 November 2006 (UTC)

- If you want, go ahead. But realize that most contributors currently on this site can't read Russian, or many other languages for that matter, and therefore you will be alienating some of them. Also, you must then consider the need for a Russian admin; do you know anyone reliable for this purpose? I haven't seen any Russian contributions made here since I joined. Also, the Future Wikia lacks a Russion character keyboard. --Yunzhong Hou 22:14, 21 November 2006 (UTC)
- I am curious about what our Russian-speaking friends have to say. I suspect the simplest thing is for them to create a Russian-language wiki on Wikia, and for us to put that wiki on our InterMap (and for them to put future.wikia.com on their InterMap) to make it easy to make lots of cross-links betwen the 2 wiki. Or is there a better way? (Is there a way to make it easy for these people to use the pictures we have on this wiki, and for us to use the pictures they post to their wiki?) --DavidCary 17:51, 30 November 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Interwiki
Anybody knows is there wikicity Future on Russian. I would be interested. See also, my article in Wikipedia: [1] -- Val 22:00, 6 May 2006 (UTC)
Paranoid 18:34, 7 May 2006 (UTC)
- There is now a Russian wiki similar to this one. See http://rtd2.pbwiki.com/ Paranoid 11:37, 5 August 2006 (UTC)
[edit] merge with futures wiki
We had a long discussion about whether or not to merge http://futures.wiki.taoriver.net/ with http://future.wikia.com/ .
Alas, while we were busy writing content on both wiki, that discussion was deleted (apparently accidentally) -- [2], [3].
So ... what's the current status? --DavidCary 21:06, 28 September 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Proposed move
Jonathan Despres suggested that this wiki is moved to a separate domain - www.nanoaging.com/wiki for now and later to a separate domain. Any ideas? Personally I don't think it's a good idea right now. Paranoid 15:51, 18 February 2006 (UTC)
I don't understand the case for it.
I see that this wiki has been copied there, which is fine by me; I would just politely request that the name and icon at the top-left make it appear to be a different wiki than this one.
I do think that the wiki should be WikiNoded together.
We cannot build our most important project for this WIKI on wikicities, our school of futurology and raise money for it. That`s why we need to change this wikicities and go with our own boats. I always copy the changes you made on the future wikicities to my wiki so that we dont need to work to replace it correctly. What would be our new url ? I added many pages not appearing on your wiki already: www.nanoaging.com/wiki/Images_Future and a link to the museum of Paul Allen about science fiction it`s better to go with me I think --Jonano
the web site is ready with its new url:
- I personally don't understand about the school of futurology, and have too many questions about it. Raising money for a school is not a priority for me, personally, though I'm glad there are people thinking about it.
- This wiki, on the other hand, makes a lot of sense to me.
- I think using WikiCities is a good idea, because none of us have to make any expenses related to the upkeep of the wiki. For instance, when MediaWiki upgrades in response to spamming, or anything of that nature, we don't have to do anything- everything just magically works. This is a major benefit.
- Futher, there are advantages to having a wiki community that is it's own community, not attached to any particular institution or organization. It is free from external controls, and influences. Granted, we make some consessions to WikiCities by being here (mainly, text must be GFDL,) but that's fine.
There is no special expense to do with futurism.biz, we pay a one time fee of 3$ for our hosting and 8$ per year for the url. I can myself keep the wiki up and free of spam. Wikicities is not good because we cant build a school on their hosting solution which is rather evil.
- Okay, but I don't think the purpose of this wiki is to be a school. (right?) I mean, a school is cool, but I don't think that's what this is. LionKimbro
The school is the most important page of this wiki, this is the basement of our religion, our movement, the school is our house and the wiki will support this school. Students will add pages about the future with this wiki.
- Okay. I don't think that way, but if you want to make a school, I wouldn't dream of trying to stop you! But I haven't been convinced that the wiki should be moved. LionKimbro
The think is that you dont see that our project can become bigger than just a wiki. We should be united. You didnot see the architectural plans of our school, it is neat. --Jonano
You cannot earn money in futurology on wikicities. That is the point, we are limited. We should be courageous and have our own boat. --Jonano
I'm sorry; Don't let my limited vision stop you. You see something that I do not. Don't let me stop you. I'm not being sarcastic. LionKimbro
I have installed the spam filter, google search and wikipedia search I think it`s time for you guys to build on futurism.biz! Please! I need you! --Jonano

I dont have a telephone! and I prefer emails! the future is virtual! I dont have a microphone too so I cant use skype.. what you want to say? --Jonano
If you don't have a phone, that's a problem. Your school effort isn't going to get very far without a telephone.
Virtual? You must be joking; What is a telephone if not a purely auditory virtual reality.
Telephones are fast, extremely reliable, extend all over the world, have no volume maintenance problems, and no virtual mute buttons, intentional or otherwise. A telephone is still one of the most useful technologies in the world, and will likely be that way until we have equally reliable virtual face-2-face meeting software and matching hardware. And believe me, that's going to be at least 15 years into the future. I don't know if you know just how refined telephone technology is, and how universal that refinement has been pushed. It's one thing to make a device, it's another to make it good, and it's still another to make it near universally available. So, don't scorn the technology, unless you've got a better replacement. And Skype is so totally not a replacement.
I don't have one message to "say," I have a lot of q&a and decision making to make that is highly variable based on how you respond. So, voice is basically it. IRC is cute, but incredibly slow.
I will have my own telephonist for my school, I dont have a telephone right now I cannot call you, I would love to do so..
Okay, well, we should still talk somehow. How about IRC? 216.254.10.144
