The PlayStation 5 (officially abbreviated as PS5) is a home video game console from Sony Computer Entertainment. Announced as the successor to the PlayStation 4 during a press conference on March 3, 2019, it was launched on November 30, 2019 in North America, and December 5, 2019 in Europe, South America and Australia. It competes with Nintendo's NX and Microsoft's Xbox 362, as part of the Ninth generation of video game consoles.
The PlayStation 5 is known as one of Sony's biggest risks. One of the main risks was to use HVD (Holographic Versitile Disc) for games instead of the more conventional 4K Blu Ray. It would pay of as the PS5 would help the HVD beat the 4K Blu Ray in the format wars at a time when physical media was coming back. AMD's NEXT processor was used for the PS5, which made the console much more expensive to produce.
