An atmospheric diving suit that could go to extreme depths became possible in the 22nd century. They could go to the bottom of the ocean.

Atmospheric diving suits were nothing new. The first ADS was built in 1715 by British merchant John Lethbridge. Since then, many people had been experimenting with atmospheric diving suits. The most well-known in the 20th century was the JIM suit. It was introduced in 1969 by Britain and became successful in 1975. Its main application was in the petroleum industry. However, it was best known for its role in the James Bond movie For Your Eyes Only. In 1987, the WASP suit replaced it. Another replacement for the JIM suit was the Newtsuit. The Newtsuit was advanced. It had a propulsion system. This was the basis for the ADS 2000 which had an increased depth capability as well as an integrated dual thrust system. In the 21st century, atmospheric diving suits became better.

In the 21st century, the successors of the ADS 2000 were being made of lighter and stronger materials. As a result, atmospheric diving suits were less bulky. Advances in joint technology also allowed for a greater freedom of movement. They also used more advanced battery technology allowing them to last longer. Superconducting batteries allowed them to operate indefinitely. New ADS's had heavy duty maneuver packs as no longer needed to be attached to umbilical cables. A computer with a heads-up display was incorporated into the transparent screen. This computer had speech recognition software and advanced sensors. Powered exoskeletons were incorporated into every 21st century ADS after the ADS 2000. They also had articulated gauntlets that fit around a user's hand. Diver accommodations were improved as a result. Artificial gills were incorporated to supplement the onboard air supply. Not only that, but atmospheric diving suits were being launched from new submarines. By the end of the 21st century, atmospheric diving suits were going to extreme depths.

Tech Level: 12-13

An ADS that could go down to 20,000 feet or below was a technological marvel in 2100.  They resembled the powered exoskeletons of science fiction. By then, underwater colonies were reaching that far down. Robots did most jobs at these depths. So extreme depth atmospheric diving suits were used for certain select purposes such as military and exploration purposes. In some cases, atmospheric diving suits, in general, were not needed because some people modified themselves to be anthropomorphic aquatic animals.
