Extraterrestrial Colonization Techniques

Large spacecraft carrying colonists will have to remain in orbit around the target planet for a little while other craft send down supplies and workers to construct living quarters. These spacecraft should be between 1 and 3 kilometers long, several hundred yards wide and will need shields to protect them from radiation and meteoroids. After a while, policer craft will need to be armed to protect from the inevitable enterprising pirates to come.
