Embryo screening

From Future

Embryo screening, also called 'pre-implantation genetic diagnosis', is a process that screens embryos for genetic diseases. The process consists of artificially combining many sperm cells from a man with many egg cells from a woman, so as to create many embryos. The embryos are given numbers, and then cell samples are taken from all of the embryos. The DNA from the cell samples is analyzed so as to detect defective genes, such that the genetic defects of particular embryos are identified.

Embryo screening is the technology that was featured in the movie 'Gattaca'.
