CGI (Computer-generated imagery) are images of reality simulated on a computer. By about 2012 static images rendered on an average PC will often be indistinguishable from photos. By 2020 many people will be spending half of their lives in a virtual reality.

To understand the prospects and its inevitability it helps to understand the history of CGI and its present state.
