Governments are increasingly turning to technology to close their borders to uncontrolled immigrants and other "unwanted" people. US is using high-tech fences, motion sensors, infrared cameras and unmanned aerial vehicles in its virtual wall project. European Union plans to deploy 2500 aerial drones in Mediterranean sea and Balkans. South Korea plans to use robots armed with guns at its border with North Korea.
Will these efforts lead only to the escalation in the high-tech battle with human traffickers and smugglers or will they allow governments to erect impenetrable iron curtains at will, removing all checks on government power? It remains an open question.
