Barack Hussein Obama was the 44th President of the United States, serving from 2009 to 2017, and the 10th Secretary General of the United Nations (UN) from January 2027 until his assassination on March the 2nd 2031.
Though Obama's presidential administration was mostly marked by deep national polarization, an ineffective legislature rife with gridlock, his presidency marked the beginning of a period of dominance by the Democratic party that lasted for twenty years.
He is widely credited with the Healthcare Reform Act and ending the United States' Wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and changing course on the drug war. His harshest criticisms remain the prohibitive gun-control measures and his overzealous actions in the name of national security, namely his stance on civil liberties and privacy, and his management of the drone program.
Supreme Court Nominees
Sonia Sotomayor – 2009, succeeding Justice David Souter upon his retirement. She was the first Hispanic supreme court Justice.
Elena Kagan - 2010, succeeding Justice John Paul Stevens upon his retirement.
Goodwin Liu - 2016, succeeding Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg following her retirement. He was the first Asian-American supreme court Justice.
UN Career
Elected as the head of UNESCO in 2026, Obama's term in office remains controversial. His efforts to reform the institution and focus on an agenda of peace, tolerance, human rights and peaceful coexistence were chiefly met with failure. In 2028, he submitted An Agenda for Peace, a suggestion for how the UN could respond to prevent violent conflict, however, he was criticized for the UN's failure to act during the 2030 Sudanese Genocide, which officially left over 1 million people dead, and he appeared unable to muster support in the UN for intervention in the continuing Congolese Civil War.
One of the hardest tasks during his term was dealing with the crisis of the Afghan wars and his reputation became entangled in the larger controversies over the effectiveness of the UNESCO and the role of the United States in the UN as a whole. He was assassinated on a visit to Pakistan when a bomb destroyed a conference he was attending.
Assassination
On March 2nd 2031 Obama was killed while attending a conference at the Merriot hotel in Rawalpindi. During the conference a gunman fired shots at the hotel, causing everyone inside to be evacuated to a safe room. There, one of the attendees detonated a suicide bomb killing approximately 26 people, including Obama, UN Secretary General Irina Bokova, the president of Afghanistan and the prime minister of Pakistan.
Al-Qaeda commander Mustafa Abu Hamza claimed responsibility for the attack and declared it revenge for the death of Osama Bin Laden in 2011.
