The 2017 Fall of Baghdad is a battle that takes place due to the Isis advance on Baghdad. Isis had been holding its area in Iraq but not advancing much since 2015. By January 2017 Isis started advancing on Baghdad from Mosul. 20,000 Isis Militants moved into Baghdad on January 4, 2017.

First Day Of Battle

On January 4th, 2017, as Isis militants move to attack the city 4 car bombs kill 123 Iraqi civilians and 23 Iraqi security forces. Hilary Clinton condemns the Isis offensive and the United States starts bombing Isis positions in Baghdad. There are only 15,000 Iraqi security forces in the city and they are extremely outnumbered.

United States support

Hilary Clinton Vows United States air support and the United States bombs 30 Isis targets on January 5th, 2017. Isis continues its advance and by January 8th has 30% of Baghdad under its control despite losing and estimated 1,500 militants to United States air strikes. Iraqi forces retreat to the eastern end of the city as Isis take most of the western city. Isis uses its 10 tanks that it stole from opposition forces to advance. On January 9th, 2017 a small skirmish kills 30 Iraqi security forces as Isis moves into the middle of the city now controlling 50% of the city.
